The impetus for The Coast in Winter, evolved from a presentation by band director, Melanie Brooks and the Building Bridges program. Inspired by a late winter trip to the Oregon coast, the piece rises and falls, as the ferocious waves with “king tides” pound the coast. The experience evokes conflicting emotions of fascination, melancholy, and joy. Whether it’s a walk on the cold and windy beach watching the crashing waves against the rocks, exploring icy caves along the great lakes, or curing up with a good book, the coast in winter is a special place.
